Two new members have joined the Advisory Council of the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) of North Central Iowa, completing the 16-member Council.

Karen Dole of Mason City was a North Iowa Area Community College librarian for 33 years and also worked in public, elementary and high school libraries.  She serves on the Habitat for Humanity Board of Directors and is an active Habitat ReStore volunteer.  Karen joined RSVP in 2013 and has been a Reading Buddy at Roosevelt and has had Pen Pals in Mason City and West Hancock schools. In her free time, Karen enjoys reading, cooking, computers and solving Sudoku and word games.

Carol Johnson of Mason City worked for American Greeting Cards and the College Connections Bookstore.  She has volunteered at the Mercy Hospital Gift Shop and plays in the New Horizons Band and her church bell choir.  Carol has been a Pen Pal to students at Roosevelt Elementary and Lincoln Intermediate Schools.

Larry Hill of Thompson will again serve as the chair for the RSVP Advisory Council and Bob Perry of Northwood was elected as the vice-chair.

The council provides feedback to RSVP staff in order to help shape the experience and meet the needs of individuals participating in RSVP’s programs. Its primary purpose is to monitor and review program development and assessment. Members study matters related to RSVP, make suggestions concerning the functions of the program, and provide support to the program as it serves volunteers, partner agencies and communities in its four-county service area.

RSVP of North Central Iowa is sponsored by North Iowa Area Community College and meets quarterly on the NIACC campus. Molly Anderegg is the director.

For information on RSVP, visit www.niacc.edu/rsvp or contact 1-888-466-4222 ext. 4256, (641) 422-4256 or rsvp@niacc.edu. RSVP of North Central Iowa serves Cerro Gordo, Hancock, Winnebago and Worth counties, responding to priority community needs by providing meaningful, purposeful volunteer opportunities for people ages 55 and over.

RSVP is partly funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service, State of Iowa, United Way of North Central Iowa and its four county governments.

Veterans Day Presentation on Korean War at NIACC

A Veterans Day Presentation on the Korean War will be held on Wednesday, November 11 from 2:30-4:30 p.m. on the North Iowa Area Community College campus in the Beem Center, Room 200. This event is free and open to the public. The instructor for this presentation is Bennett Smith.

On June 25th, 1950, the military forces of North Korea with the tacit support of both the Soviet Union and China invaded South Korea. South Korean and United Nations forces were pushed back to the Pusan Perimeter by September, but a brilliant counterattack at Inchon by Douglas Mac-Arthur relieved those troops and created a push into North Korea by United Nations troops. They almost got to the Yalu River, before the Chinese invaded North Korea. As Chinese troops poured across the border, the stage was set for one of the most famous battles of the war. The Battle of the Chosin Reservoir occurred from November 17th to December 13th. United Nations forces, comprised of primarily American soldiers and marines, fought a major battle in horrible freezing weather against a vastly superior Chinese force. They were encircled but managed to breakout and fight their way to the coast. For their bravery and valor, they will forever be known as the “the Chosin Few.” The objective of this presentation is to honor the sacrifice and service of Korean War veterans and all veterans on this Veterans Day and to educate the public regarding this important historical event during the Korean War.

A recommended reading list and handout will be provided, and there will be a question and answer session after the lecture.

Bennett Smith is an asset manager in Clear Lake, Iowa, and an instructor in History and Political Science at North Iowa Area Community College. He is also an instructor in various lifelong learning programs including the NIACC Lifelong Learning Institute; the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Iowa State University and the LIFE program at Rochester Community and Technical College in Rochester, Minnesota.

Smith holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Speech Communication from Iowa State University, and has also completed graduate work at the University of Iowa in Social Foundations of Education. He is currently a graduate student in the Master of Arts program in History at Iowa State University.

NIACC Named to Victory Media’s 2016 Military Friendly® Schools List

2016_MFS_Logo_200x200

North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) announced today that it has been designated a 2016 Military Friendly® School by Victory Media, the leader in successfully connecting the military and civilian worlds, and publisher of G.I. Jobs®, STEM JobsSM and Military Spouse. Now in its seventh year, the original, premier Military Friendly® Schools designation provides service members and their families with transparent, data-driven ratings about post-military education and career opportunities.

Institutions competed for the elite Military Friendly® School title by completing a survey of over 100 questions covering ten categories, including military support on campus, graduation and employment outcomes, and military spouse policies. Survey responses were scored against benchmarks across these key indicators of success. In addition, data was independently tested by EY (Ernst & Young) based upon the weightings and methodology established by Victory Media with guidance from an independent Advisory Board of higher education and recruiting professionals. A full list of board members can be found at MilitaryFriendly.com/advisory-board.

The Military Friendly® Schools designation is awarded to the top colleges, universities, community colleges and trade schools in the country that are doing the most to embrace military students, and to dedicate resources to ensure their success both in the classroom and after graduation. The methodology used for making the Military Friendly® Schools list has changed the student veteran landscape to one much more transparent, and has played a significant role over the past seven years in capturing and advancing best practices to support military students across the country.

“NIACC is excited to receive this designation for the seventh year in a row,” said Michele Petznick, VA Certifying Official and Registrar at NIACC.   “NIACC is able to provide veterans, spouses and dependents a variety of support and resources as they pursue their academic goals.  By offering these services, NIACC prepares the student with a personalized transition plan into the academic environment and civilian life.”

“Post-secondary institutions earning the 2016 Military Friendly® School award have exceptionally strong programs for transitioning service members and spouses,” said Daniel Nichols, Chief Product Officer of Victory Media and Navy Reserve veteran. “Our Military Friendly® Schools are truly aligning their military programs and services with employers to help students translate military experience, skills and training into successful careers after graduation.”

For more information about NIACC’s commitment to attracting and supporting military students, visit our website at http://www.niacc.edu/admissions/veterans-assistance-2/.

NIACC will be showcased along with other 2016 Military Friendly® Schools in the annual Guide to Military Friendly® Schools, special education issues of G.I. Jobs® and Military Spouse Magazine, and on MilitaryFriendly.com.

NIACC Offers Special Presentation on World War II In Commemoration of Pearl Harbor Day

North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) will offer a program discussing World War II on Monday, December 7, in Beem Center 200 on the NIACC campus from 3:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M.  This free presentation will be facilitated by Bennett Smith, history and political science instructor at NIACC, and will commemorate Pearl Harbor Day. Several World War II veterans will share their experiences.

World War II was an incredibly costly conflict that involved all the major world powers from 1939 to 1945. Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan were bent on expanding their empires, triggering the conflagration that ultimately led to the deaths of over 60 million people. American involvement in the War got into full gear after the fateful attack on Pearl Harbor, and ended with the dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In between those key events were many small and large battles that required enormous sacrifices by American soldiers, sailors and marines to prevent tyranny from enveloping the world.

The facilitator, Bennett Smith, is an instructor in History and Political Science at North Iowa Area Community College. He is also an instructor in various lifelong learning programs including the NIACC Lifelong Learning Institute; the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Iowa State University and the LIFE program at Rochester Community and Technical College in Rochester, Minnesota.

He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Speech Communication from Iowa State University, and has also done graduate work at the University of Iowa in Social Foundations of Education. He is currently a graduate student in the Master of Arts program in History at Iowa State University.

The World War II presentation is offered to the public for no charge through NIACC’s Lifelong Learning Institute. To register, please call the Lifelong Learning Institute at 641-422-4358.

Christian Ames of West Fork High School has been selected as a finalist in the BizInnovator National Competition.

Out of 170 applicants across 22 states, a total of 12 finalists have been chosen. To be selected, Ames submitted a business concept that showed not only strong viability in the marketplace but also the ability to execute on his idea.

“Through this competition I feel I can help natural poultry farmers raise their birds with ease,” Ames says.

Finalists will present in a final ‘pitch and win’. $3,000 in cash prizes will be awarded to the three top pitches.

Ames is a student in the Introduction to Entrepreneurship course offered at the Rockwell Industrial Academy at West Fork High School in Rockwell. This is a new course that was added last year to promote hands-on learning and entrepreneurship. Josh Byrnes, who teaches the class and also serves as Industrial Division Chair at NIACC, says that he is very proud of Christian and the work that he has done. “I am a big believer in growing our own. Every community in America wants to attract a Fortune 500 company to town. I would rather grow a Fortune 500 company,” said Byrnes.

The BizInnovator National Competition is sponsored by the Jacobson Institute for Youth Entrepreneurship at the University of Iowa. The Jacobson Institute for Youth Entrepreneurship enriches K-12 students’ lives through classroom and practical educational experiences.

Through teacher education, innovative curricula, and outreach, the Jacobson Institute fosters the “entrepreneurial mindset”—encouraging creativity, innovation, critical thinking, and problem solving, and preparing students for success in the worlds of business and entrepreneurship.

NIACC Foundation Continues Tradition with Honorarium

Members of the North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) Foundation created an annual Honorarium in 2010 to recognize exceptional efforts of full-time staff and faculty at NIACC. The Excellence in Service award is awarded each year by the NIACC Foundation Board and consists of up to $1000 which can be awarded to one person or split between two.

“The review committee is in awe of the talent and dedication of our NIACC employees. This award is a wonderful way to honor our staff and faculty members for the many things they do,” said Karen Knudtson, member of both the College and Foundation boards. “Our employees are our best asset at NIACC and we want to show how much we appreciate them.”

Nominations from peers were accepted on behalf of employees who have gone above and beyond their daily obligations. They could be nominated for a variety of reasons, including, but not limited to, student support, service to the College, leadership or community engagement.

During an all-staff meeting on January 13, 2016 two employees were surprised with the announcement that they are this year’s recipients:

Tanya Dadisman, Administrative Assistant in the Admissions department, was nominated because of her exceptional work with prospective students and current students. Tanya strives to make the transition to college easier for all students, whether it’s assisting a high school student with an application for admission or a helping a current student make connections on campus. She is also an outstanding and respected leader of the Student Ambassadors.

David Trunkhill, Custodial Supervisor, was recognized for his dedication to ensuring the College is ready for the day ahead. His responsibilities are varied and David is always willing to help where needed and give his best effort. Trunkhill also gives back to his community by serving on the ambulance crew for the past 20 years and as the Chief of the Titonka Fire Department.

Each received $500 from the NIACC Foundation.

RSVP of North Central Iowa Volunteers Applauded for Helping Students Succeed

Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) of North Central Iowa volunteers are tutoring and mentoring middle and junior high school students this school year, working on literacy skills and serving as positive role models for young adolescents in an effort to help them succeed academically and in life.

Reading Coach Volunteers are paired with students at least once a week in schools throughout RSVP’s service area. This year, RSVP Volunteers are working with students at North Iowa Middle School in Buffalo Center, Forest City Middle School and Lincoln Intermediate School in Mason City. RSVP is sponsored by North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC).

January is National Mentoring Month, a time to honor mentors and celebrate their efforts as they fulfill an important need across the country. In addition to tutoring students in reading, volunteers are one more caring adult in the lives of the students they serve.

“While January is designated National Mentoring Month, your service to middle school students in North Central Iowa provides countless valuable rewards to the students year-round,” NIACC President Steve Schulz said. “The mentoring you provide is a critical component in these young people’s lives, helping them make the decisions that ultimately lead to improved opportunities and connections which have an impact in real life. The reading assistance you offer helps to ensure their classroom success both this year and throughout their academic life.”

RSVP is part of a national network of programs called Senior Corps that recruits adults 55 and older to use their skills, talents and life experience to help meet community needs through volunteer service. RSVP of North Central Iowa’s focus is literacy, including programs such as Reading Coaches.

Molly Anderegg, RSVP director, said the need is great for more Reading Coach Volunteers. “Each school RSVP partners with has more students who need extra reading time,” she said. “People tend to think working with middle school students can be challenging, but more often than not, it is also rewarding. I encourage older people to consider this opportunity and help an adolescent student in their community.”

The Reading Coach Program is a certified mentoring program with the State of Iowa. Under the Iowa Commission on Volunteer Service, the Iowa Mentoring Partnership works to improve lives, strengthen communities, and foster civic engagement through service and volunteering by supporting quality mentoring programs.

RSVP of North Central Iowa has 22 Reading Coaches serving during the 2015-2016 school year, meeting with students each week to work on literacy skills, serving as mentors, and often developing strong bonds with the students. RSVP would like to thank the following Reading Coach Volunteers for their dedication to youth in North Central Iowa:

North Iowa Middle School – Buffalo Center: Joe Angstman and Connie Brooks

Forest City Middle School – Forest City: Judith Anderson, JoAnn Bartleson, Annette Bruns, Joan Hansen, Ken Hansen, Cynthia Korth, Roberta Kraft-Abrahamson, Karolyn Overlie,
Mary Schaefer and Liz Wilson

Lincoln Intermediate School – Mason City: Ralph Cassady, Janae Haygood,
Raymond Heimbuch, Linda McCollum, Vel Mondahl, John Nolan, Vicky Nolan, Harry Stanton, Mary Stanton and Julie Thoreen-Birkedal

To become a Reading Coach, or for more information on RSVP of North Central Iowa, visit www.niacc.edu/rsvp/ or contact 1-888-466-4222 ext. 4256, (641) 422-4256 or rsvp@niacc.edu. NIACC Proudly Presents Film on Norway

$

The 2015-16 Travel and Adventure Film Series continues with filmmaker Dale Johnson presenting “Norway” at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 11 in the North Iowa Community Auditorium, located on the North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) campus. The 2015-16 Travel and Adventure Series is sponsored by NIACC.

“NORWAY” will cover the entire country from south to the North Cape, the most northern point in Europe. Along the way we will visit all the major cities starting with Oslo, the Capital, and Constitution Day celebration…the biggest holiday in Norway after Christmas.

Pilgrims have been trekking to Trondhiem since the 1100’s. They still do…to visit the St. Olaf Cathedral dedicated to King Olaf, first Viking leader to bring Christianity to Norway. Early day pilgrims from Germany, France and many countries were fed and housed by Norwegians along the way. It has been happening for almost 1000 years.

Stavanger is the center of the oil industry which has transformed Norway into a relatively wealthy nation today. Modern technology has been applied to developing the most stupendous offshore drilling platforms anywhere.

Bergen is the second largest city, an old time fish market still exists along the waterfront, as well as part of the medieval city… wooden buildings which escaped the many times the city was destroyed by fire.

North we journey over to the Lofoton Islands and some of the most surreal beauty of the country. We see rows and rows of cod drying in the sun. This used to be the major export of Norway… declining fish stocks have forced the Islanders to divert attention to tourism.

To that end they have discovered and rebuilt the largest Viking communal house ever found. The Vikings turn out to be more than just brutal raiders…they had sophisticated housing with most advanced construction techniques, wove complex fabrics for clothing, were the first to develop sails that could sail into the wind, the first to develop a compass, the first Europeans to discover land in North America (500 years before Columbus). They were such accomplished sailors that they were able to take cattle and sheep from Norway to Iceland across the Atlantic Ocean! A thousand years ago!

In Alta, Norway the midnight sun warms the air to 80 degrees Fahrenheit, even though we are 300 miles north of the Arctic Circle. The Sami live here… people you have always called Lapplanders. They have been here 10,000 years and still depend on reindeer to some extent, as they have for centuries.

Almost all Norwegians speak English, have a relative living in America, or have visited the U.S. themselves. But they still retain a unique culture and remain a vibrant, dynamic people, determined to make a satisfying and rewarding life for every citizen in their Country. How they accomplish it is a fascinating study of a success oriented people.

The 2015-16 Travel and Adventure Film Series is shown in the North Iowa Community Auditorium. These films appeal to a wide audience of travelers. Beautiful scenery, out-of-the-ordinary locations, various cultures and people are depicted throughout the films. Tickets are only $5 for adults and $3 for students. Tickets may be purchased at the door. For information, call the NIACC Continuing Education office at 641-422-4358.

This free President’s Day presentation will be facilitated by Bennett Smith, History and Political Science instructor at NIACC.

Washington was justly regarded as the greatest of the Founders for his leadership role in winning the War for Independence, presiding over the Constitutional Convention and establishing the Presidency of the United States on solid footing. His commitment to surrender military and political power at key moments in the early life of our Republic cemented his greatness in the view of other Founders and the American people. The judgment of history has solidified that reputation.

This lecture will take an in-depth look at the life and impact of George Washington. A recommended reading list and handout will be provided, and there will be an answer and question session after the lecture. The lecture is sponsored by NIACC’s Lifelong Learning Institute and the public is invited to attend free of charge. To register, please call the Lifelong Learning Institute at 641-422-4358.

North Iowa Area Community College Announces Common Read Selection For 2016-2017

OT HC

North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) proudly announces the selection of Orphan Train as their upcoming Common Read selection for the 2016-2017 school year. The Common Read is a program designed to engage NIACC, its students, staff, faculty and community members, in a unified intellectual activity. For first-year students it introduces them to academic expectations, respectful discourse, and community building. The Common Read is supported by the Performing Arts and Leadership Series as well as the NIACC Foundation. The Performing Arts and Leadership Series will sponsor a keynote address by Christina Baker Kline Wednesday, October 26, 2016. First-year students will be asked to read the book as part of their Composition One requirements. The Common Read book is available through the NIACC Bookstore.  Copies of Orphan Train will be available through the NIACC Bookzone for $10.60 starting Monday, March 21st. Books can also be ordered online through the Bookzone at http://www.niaccbookzone.com/ with shipping available for an additional charge after March 21st.

This program is supported by the NIACC Curriculum and Academic Affairs council, and comprised of faculty and staff members, community members, Principal Financial Group Foundation and Mercy Medical Center North Iowa.

“Christina Baker Kline’s Orphan Train makes for compulsive reading–this is a story of resilience in the face of tremendous odds and oppressive loneliness. Meticulously researched and yet full of the breath of life, Kline’s novel takes us on a historical journey where survival depends upon one’s own steely backbone, and the miracle of a large and generous heart.” Helen Schulman

Between 1854 and 1929, so-called orphan trains ran regularly from the cities of the East Coast to the farmlands of the Midwest, carrying thousands of abandoned children whose fates would be determined by pure luck. Would they be adopted by a kind and loving family, or would they face a childhood and adolescence of hard labor and servitude?

As a young Irish immigrant, Vivian Daly was one such child, sent by rail from New York City to an uncertain future a world away. Returning east later in life, Vivian leads a quiet, peaceful existence on the coast of Maine, the memories of her upbringing rendered a hazy blur. But in her attic, hidden in trunks, are vestiges of a turbulent past.

Seventeen-year-old Molly Ayer knows that a community service position helping an elderly widow clean out her attic is the only thing keeping her out of juvenile hall. But as Molly helps Vivian sort through her keepsakes and possessions, she discovers that she and Vivian aren’t as different as they appear. A Penobscot Indian who has spent her youth in and out of foster homes, Molly is also an outsider being raised by strangers; and she, too, has unanswered questions about the past.

Moving between contemporary Maine and Depression-era Minnesota, Orphan Train is a powerful tale of upheaval and resilience, second chances, and unexpected friendship.

Christina Baker Kline did extensive research to prepare for writing this novel. After finding articles online from the New York Times and other newspapers, she read hundreds of first-person testimonials from train riders, orphan-train reunion groups, and historical archives. That research led her to The New York Public Library where she found a trove of original contemporaneous materials. Baker Kline also traveled to County Galway in Ireland to research her character’s Irish background.

In the course of writing this book she attended train riders’ reunions in New York and Minnesota and interviewed train riders and their descendants. There aren’t many train riders left; those who remain are  over 90 years old. Baker Kline was struck by how eager they were to tell their stories. In talking to them and reading their oral histories, she found that they tended to not dwell on the considerable hardships they’d faced; instead, they focused on how grateful they were for their children and grandchildren and communities for lives that wouldn’t have been possible if they hadn’t been on those trains.

For decades, many train riders believed that the train they rode on was the only one. They didn’t know that they were part of a massive 75-year social experiment. It wasn’t until their own children and grandchildren got involved and started asking questions –there are more than two million descendants, according to some estimates – that they met other train riders and began sharing their stories.

Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline is the second Common Read selection for the College; the first being the successful presentation of Wine to Water by Doc Hendley in 2015.

North Iowa Area Community College Named As One Of Top 150 In The Country

aspenprizetop150_2017

Highlighting the critical importance of improving student success in America’s community colleges, the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program has named North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) as one of the nation’s top 150 community colleges eligible to compete for the 2017 Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence and $1 million dollars in prize funds, as well as Siemens Technical Scholars Program student scholarships.

The prize, awarded every two years, is the nation’s signature recognition of high achievement and performance among America’s community colleges and recognizes institutions for exceptional student outcomes in four areas: student learning, certificate and degree completion, employment and earnings, and access and success for minority and low-income students.

Nearly half of America’s college students attend community college, with more than seven
million students – youth and adult learners – working towards certificates and degrees in these institutions across the country.

“Community colleges have tremendous power to change lives, and their success will increasingly define our nation’s economic strength and the potential for social mobility in our country,” said Josh Wyner, executive director of the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program. “This competition is designed to spotlight the excellent work being done in the most effective community colleges, those that best help students obtain meaningful, high-quality education and training for competitive-wage jobs after college. We hope it will raise the bar and provide a roadmap to better student outcomes for community colleges nationwide.”

A full list of the selected colleges and details on the selection process are available at www.aspenprize.org.

Scholarship Opportunities

For the first time, the 150 Prize-eligible institutions are also invited to nominate exceptional students enrolled in their best middle-skill STEM programs for scholarships. Up to 50 Siemens Technical Scholars will be selected from programs that provide outstanding preparation for high-demand jobs in manufacturing, energy, health care, and information technology. A partnership between the Siemens Foundation and the Aspen Institute, the Siemens Technical Scholars Program intends to help our nation’s community colleges and their business partners bridge the gap between projected shortages of skilled workers and the millions of high-demand jobs in these STEM industries. Scholarship winners and the programs that deliver rigorous training enabling their success will be announced in fall 2016. For more information and to view video profiles of 2015 Siemens Technical Scholars, go to: http://as.pn/stscholars.

NIACC and 149 other community colleges were selected from a national pool of over 1,000 public two-year colleges using publicly available data on student outcomes in three areas:

• Performance (retention, graduation rates including transfers, and degrees and certificates per 100 full-time equivalent students)
• Improvement (awarded for steady improvement in each performance metric over time)
• Equity (evidence of strong completion outcomes for minority and low-income students)

NIACC has been invited to submit an application to the Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence containing detailed data on degree and certificate completion (including progress and transfer rates), labor market outcomes (employment and earnings), and student learning outcomes.

Ten finalists will be named in fall 2016. The Aspen Institute will then conduct site visits to each of the finalists and collect additional quantitative data. A distinguished Prize Jury will select a grand prize winner and a few finalists with distinction in early 2017.
###

The Aspen Prize is funded by the Joyce Foundation, the Siemens Foundation, and the Kresge Foundation.

The Aspen College Excellence Program aims to advance higher education practices, policies, and leadership that significantly improve student outcomes. Through the Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence, the New College Leadership Project, and other initiatives, the College Excellence Program works to improve colleges’ understanding and capacity to teach and graduate students, especially the growing population of low-income and minority students on American campuses. For more information, visit www.aspeninstitute.org/college-excellence.

The Aspen Institute is an educational and policy studies organization based in Washington, DC. Its mission is to foster leadership based on enduring values and to provide a nonpartisan venue for dealing with critical issues. The Institute is based in Washington, DC; Aspen, Colorado; and on the Wye River on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. It also has offices in New York City and an international network of partners. Grant provided by Farm Credit Services of America Working Here Fund
for Agriculture Education
MASON CITY, IOWA – North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) received a $2,000 Working Here Fund grant for the Growing the Beef Program for Young Farmers.  The grant is provided through Farm Credit Services of America’s (FCSAmerica) Working Here Fund.
NIACC will be purchasing a bred heifer for the on-campus Farm Lab.  This will help to rebuild the cow herd to better serve students that attend North Iowa Area Community College.  The Farm Lab provides advanced education for young regional farmers who want to study beef production and offers opportunities to agriculture students from other areas to gain hands-on experience.
“We are offering a program that is not widely available in our region,” said Jana Barracks, from the NIACC Foundation.  “We are positioned perfectly to grow this program to include more advanced labs and hand-on experience for students.”
“At Farm Credit Services of America, we understand that by educating tomorrow’s farmers, today, we are supporting our rural communities with programs like the Growing the Beef Program for Young Farmers,” said Julie Hoodjer, regional vice president of retail operations at FCS America’s Mason City office.
NIACC is one of 53 organizations to receive a Working Here Fund grant in the fourth quarter of 2015. FCSAmerica awarded $93,190 during the latest grant cycle ending December 31, 2015.
About Farm Credit Services of America

The 13th Annual Gardening Seminar, “Come Bloom with Us”, will be held Thursday, March 17 at North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) from 8:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.  Organizers say the event offers participants an opportunity to learn from educators and local gardening specialists and get an early start on the gardening season in North Iowa.

Gardeners will hear presentations on a variety of topics ranging from plants with style, creating new plants for gardeners in the Midwest (hybridizing daylilies), learning about woodpeckers, water-wise gardening, and the new garden: foliage, color & texture.  Presenters include:  Ellen Montgomery, The Basic Birder; Kelly Norris, Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden; Nan Ripley, Walkabout Gardens;  Aaron Steil and Ed Lyon of Reiman Gardens.

Market Street is a popular aspect of the seminar featuring garden-related business displays. Participants have an opportunity to learn about North Iowa gardening businesses and make purchases.

The Gardening Seminar is sponsored by North Iowa Area Community College.  The $39 fee includes a noon lunch. Reservations are taken at 1-888 –466-4222 ext. 4358 or 641-422-4358.       If you have questions about this event, please call Carol Peterson at 641-923-2252.

Madagascar

The 2015-16 Travel and Adventure Film Series continues with Marlin Darrah presenting his film “Madagascar” at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 19 in the North Iowa Community Auditorium, located on the North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) campus. The 2015-16 Travel and Adventure Series is sponsored by NIACC.

Madagascar is a place that has long fired the imagination of the adventurous traveler.  The fourth largest island in the world has some of the planets most unusual and delightful wildlife – from the famous lemurs to brilliant chameleons to fascinating tortoises to migrating humpback whales.

Madagascar is also home to a wonderful blending of cultures and ancient kingdoms.  The Merina people for example, in the highlands of Madagascar, sailed to Madagascar hundreds of years ago from such far-flung places as the Indonesian islands and Malaysia.  There is also Arabian, Chinese and continental black African blood to be found in some of Madagascar’s people.

This program explores the fascinating cultures and geography of this great island nation.  We begin in the capital city of Antananarivo (called Tana), in the central highlands.  From the right place, in the right light, this city is one of the most attractive capitals in the developing world. Brightly colored houses stacked up the hillsides with mauve jacarandas and purple bougainvillea against a dark blue sky.  But Tana can also seem squalid and dangerous, with poverty, beggars and a rising crime rate.  We’ll explore the huge central market district where it seems the entire population of 2 million people comes out on the weekend to buy and sell all things imaginable.  From exotic fruits, vegetables, meats, handicrafts, antiques, and electronics – it’s all here and it’s one of the most interesting places to be in the country.

Also fascinating is the rich history of European influence on Madagascar.  This was the land of the “golden age of piracy,” which occurred from 1680 to 1730.  More than 1000 pirates, such as the famous Capt. William Kidd, made Madagascar (and particularly the small adjacent island of St. Marie) a base of pirate operations in the Indian Ocean.  Here they divided up their stolen treasures, enjoyed the fresh water and delicious fruits and vegetables, and reveled in the ample supplies of island rum and willing female partners for their amorous adventures.  These meetings of pirates and the local people of course often produced children and today the blood of the people of St. Mary Island is 25% pirate.

Come with me then to the fabulous island of Madagascar, to reveal its many exciting natural and cultural secrets.  Explore the island of St. Mary (also known as Pirate Island) as I search for – and find – many artifacts and silver coin treasures, left behind by the infamous pirates of 300 years ago.
